2010 Oberammergau Passion Play Holidays & Escorted Coach Tours
Nestled in the Bavarian Alps, the charming village of Oberammergau will provide a breathtaking setting for the world-famous 2010 Passion Play.
Oberammergau is a municipality in the district of Garmisch-Partenkirchen, in Bavaria, Germany. The town is famous for its production of a Passion Play.
The Oberammergau Passion Play was first performed in 1634 and is the result of a vow made by the inhabitants of the village that if God spared them from the effects of the bubonic plague then sweeping the region they would perform a passion play every ten years.
The Oberammergau Passion Play is now performed in years ending with a zero, except 1984 which was the 350th anniversary, and involves over 2000 performers, all residents of the village. |
A play of life and death, promised in a moment of mortal threat - so began the history of the Oberammergau Passion Play in 1633. In the middle of the Thirty Years War, after months of suffering and death from the plague, the Oberammergauers swore an oath that they would perform the "Play of the Suffering, Death and Resurrection of Our Lord Jesus Christ" every ten years. |  |
 | At Pentecost 1634, they fulfilled their pledge for the first time on a stage they put up in the cemetery above the fresh graves of the plague victims. In the year 2000, the Community of Oberammergau performed the Passion Play they have preserved throughout the centuries with singular continuity for the 40th time. |
The village of Oberammergau houses a population of around 5,000 people, and more than half of them are involved in the production of the play, either on stage or back stage. The rest of the villagers also take an active role, mainly catering for the 5,000 visitors who attend each performance. |  |
